When scientists miss words, the films give answers!

This could be a motto for the two-day-long Forum “EUROPE: UNLIMITED” that took place in Berlin on the 13th and 14th of November. The Forum was the highlight of the project and film competition “EUROPE: UNLIMITED – Is there such a thing as Europe, and if so, how many?” which set as its aim to foster the dialogue between filmmakers, social scientists and general audience. We believe that the medium “film” is able to provide us, social scientists, with innovative perspectives and adequate vocabularies to reflect upon the most challenging questions surrounding Europe. By inviting filmmakers to a discussion we intended to give voice to those who are at the ground, close to the people and their problems across Europe. We wanted to cross the borders of our disciplines and our methodologies and engage with ambivalences, humor, irony, emotions which the films transmit successfully to the larger audience. We believe that the confrontation between the two worlds – science and art – can be productive in de- and re-politicizing topics of key relevance to the people in Europe and worldwide, and will inspire the audience in Berlin to look at their Europe with somewhat different lenses than usually.

Text by: Magdalena Nowicka (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin)

Selected by a team involving all project partners 12 films are part of the competition and will be evaluated by the members of the Jury. These films were presented during the Forum within four different main topics, which guide through the two-days programme. Each filmsession was introduced by Magdalena Nowicka and followed by a panel discussion chaired by Anna Henckel-Donnersmarck.

Curators of the film programm: Bobby Henzler, Prof. Magdalen Nowicka.
