With the theme “Alone” we address issues which can also be discussed in the other three categories: boundaries, time, and love. We’ve decided to create a separate category to give voice to young people in Europe. In various ways, all films in this category engage with the situation of youth. These are films about belonging and becoming, about individual and societal transformations. Young people in Europe need to come into terms with situations for which their parents are responsible. Being a parent myself, I feel these films force me to ask which kind of Europe I create for my children. Is it Europe in which more than anything else matters where you come from, and where your appearance, class, religion or place of residence might decide upon your life chances? How does it matter that you are born on a remote island, or in the center of ‘old Europe’, in a big city, at its outskirts or in the countryside? In the films, the personal transformations, desires and aspirations mix with the transformations in the whole Europe. – Magdalena Nowicka, Project Leader
